Mancos State Park

Stay at Mancos state park while you visit Mesa Verde National Park. It is beautiful spot, setting among the pines. It is prettier, smaller and seclude with convenient location bewteen Dolores and Mesa Verde.

The park is only 12 miles (about 30 minutes) from the national park entrance. It is a beautiful base camp for visiting the Ancient wonders of Mesa Verde.

The Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is only twenty seven miles from Mancos.

In addition, you are only 20 miles (about 35 minutes) from the Anasazi Heritage Center in Dolores, Colorado. After Mesa Verde, this incredible museum should be your second stop for anyone wanting to see the area’s archeological wonders. Anasazi Heritage Center

The park is a beautiful setting, surrounded by the distance San Juan Mountains. Situated in Jackson Gulch, the park and reservoir are nestled in a mature Ponderosa Pine forest. It is normally cool with a pleasant breeze.

There are 32 beautiful campground sites in the park. Along the northwest side of the reservoir, there are secluded campsites for tent campers. Just south of the entrance there’re 23 developed camp sites for trailers, campers and RVs. The campsites have vault toilets with drinking water.

If pitching a tent is not your style, then you can choose a Yurt. The Park has two, reservation are needed. 1-800678-2267 or online at www.parks.state.co.us.

A yurt is a reminiscent of a nomadic portable tent used by the Mongolian herders. They are circular tents made of canvas surrounding a wooden lattice wall and ceiling. The yurts have propane heaters. They have skylights and windows to provide light. The yurt’s insulated walls and propane heater/gas-log fireplace keep it warm the winter.

The reservoir is also a popular local fishing hole for yellow perch and rainbow trout. A five mile trail system weaves through Mancos Park which connects to a network of trails on The San Juan National Forest; These trails connect to grand pappy of all trails, Colorado Trail, Which you can hike from Durango to Denver.

Wildlife is abundant around Mancos Park. Beavers, chipmunks, skunks, mule deer live in and around the lake. It is fun to watch them come down to the water in the evening. The lake also attracts a variety of waterfowl, from ducks and geese
